Esan land is influenced by seasonal winds. Yearly, two seasonal winds influence the weather of Esan land. They are the South-West and North-East winds. The South-West winds blow from the Atlantic Ocean between April and October, and is warm and humid. This wind causes rainy or wet season, and influences human activities by the Esan farmers. This period is known as “Amen Ukpe” The North-East winds causes a reduction in rainfall, resulting in little or no rain in Esan land. Rainfall is significantly reduced by mid-October and a period of dry season gradually sets in. This period usually lasts from November to March in Esan land. The climate at this time is warm with temperatures that range between 23 - 25 centigrade at mid-day. The weather becomes cooler and dryer from mid-December to mid-January. This short season is referred to as Harmattan or “Okhuakhua” in Esan language.
